The Medusa Trust

The Medusa Trust, a registered charity, exists to preserve HMS Medusa, ML1387, for future generations and use her to provide benefit to the public who can experience what it was like to be on a small naval vessel of WW2.

As well as the vessel we maintain an extensive archive of documents, photographs and records of all the 480 HDMLs and their crews. We are always keen to receive new material and records of experiences on these vessels.

Medusa is recognised as being one of the vessels selected to represent the nation's maritime heritage by her inclusion in the National Historic Fleet.

Medusa has undergone a major refit mainly funded by The Heritage Lottery Fund.  The work has been done in conjunction with The Maritime Workshop of Gosport and has provided an opportunity to young shipwrights to learn and practice traditional shipbuilding skills. Medusa was re-launched on 1 March 2010 and re-dedicated at a ceremony attended by HRH the Princess Royal on 21 October 2010. At this ceremony Medusa was presented with the first of the new Historic Ships  Red Ensign.

Medusa is entirely funded by donations and operated by volunteers.  If you would like to help with crewing, maintenance or just be part of the Medusa team, please go to the Support Group page on this web site.

We would like to thank all those companies who helped us during the refit and continue to support Medusa, please follow this link to see the full list.

Latest News...September 2011

In the last days two of Medusa's crew, Graham Davis and Peter Boyce have crossed the bar.  We wish them fair winds and calm seas, we will miss them.

Medusa will be at the Southampton Boat Show on 23, 24 and 25th September, come and have a look round....Unfortunately due a to an engine problem we did not make it, appologies to all those who came looking for us.

Medusa has moved to Haslar Marina close to the former lightship the "Mary Mouse"

On Trafalgar Day (21 October) Medusa was re-dedicated at a service conducted by the Naval Chaplain Rev Wort in the Naval base at Portsmouth.   Later the vessel was visited by HRH The Princess Royal and, at a ceremony ashore, presented the vessel with a new red ensign bearing the crest of National Historic Ships surmounted by a coronet to indicate inclusion in The National Historic Fleet. Medusa is the first vessel to fly the new ensign which required a warrant signed by The First sea Lord and Secretary of State for Defence.
